Why you should not buy dogs from irresponsible breeders

These two lovable dogs were taken from a breeder.

On Friday night, 8th of January 2010, JAAN received two Miniature Pinchers; these two lovable dogs were taken from a breeder.

A friend informed us, there is a breeder wants to get rid of her unproductive dogs because they are becoming a burden to keep.  These dogs had one week to find a new home or she would dispose of them.

This is the kind of breeder that supplies dogs to pet shops and sells the puppies online.  Although they were kept clean and well fed, they never left their cages. They never had any freedom of movement.  They were bred twice a year and after a couple of weeks their puppies would be harvested and they would be ready to have another litter of puppies.  This woman currently has around 50 dogs in small cages in a locker-type type arrangement.

The two miniature pinchers came with no names, since they had only been used as breeding stocks.  We named them Bonnie and Clyde.  At the age of 4 and 5 years old, these dogs are not old at all.  Most Miniature Pinchers can live up to 10-15 years, but at breeders and puppy mills, being unproductive is the end of their lives.

When Bonnie first came to us she was a nervous dog and she seemed afraid and timid in her new environment.  Clyde was more friendly and confident inside the crate but when he was taken out so  we could take his pictures, he panicked.  These two had obviously never been outside and had had minimal contact with humans.

Because both dogs were in good physical condition when they came in we were able to find them a new home quickly.  Bonnie was sterilized right away and Clyde a few days later.

Please don’t buy puppies from pet shops or online shops!  The more money breeders make out of these poor dogs, the more they would be encouraged to enlarge their business

Both dogs are now adopted in a new home. They are now enjoying their new life, learning to be able to run around and enjoying the sunshine-a privilege they never had when living as breeding stock.

When you see cute puppies at the pet shops, it is very tempting to buy them.  But behind those cute
puppies were sad and timid parents, who spent their lives behind bars, producing puppies and when they were too tired or not productive anymore, they were thrown away like garbage.

Here’s what you can do to help these poor dogs:

  1. If you are interested in having a dog, please consider adopting one from JAAN!  Do not take part in any kind of animal trade!
  2. Spay your pets, whether they are purebreds or mixed breeds. Be a responsible owner, there is no guarantee that your pet’s puppies or kittens would not end up living sad and abused lives!
  3. Tell your friends and relatives about JAAN and encourage them to adopt instead of buying.
  4. JAAN is always rescuing dogs like Bonnie and Clyde, and we’re always in need of medical fees and foster homes.  The number of animals we can rescue depends on your participation!
