Cikananga Wildlife Rescue Centre

One of the main concerns of JAAN is the cruel wildlife trade. The wildlife trade in Indonesia is still very big;  animals are caught from the wild and end up caged in people’s private home’s or zoos.

Since the collapse of the Indonesian Rescue Centre Network in 2006, JAAN  has witnessed an increase in the trade in wildlife; nowadays we observe critically endangered primates like the slow loris (Nycticebus coucang spp) and many different raptor species  more openly being sold on the streets in Jakarta, at different locations, in bigger numbers.

JAAN  monitors the trade in Jakarta; the horrific animal markets where it all happens. Indonesia has a strong law for the protection of biodiversity (Law No. 5 1990) but law enforcement has been poor in the last two years. It is time for a change!

Cikananga, near Sukabumi, was the biggest rescue centre (covering 14 hectares) part of the Indonesian Rescue Centre Network. Cikananga has struggled throughout the last years to remain and exist. It was a hard time for both the animals and the staff. at present 290 animals are cared for in the centre.

At present Cikananga is collectively assisted to become fully operational again. JAAN offers the option to symbolically ‘adopt’ an animal at the Cikananga; your money will help to care for the animals at the centre. Contact us for more information!
