These shocking images show how, in one of Jakarta’s most crowded slums, the emaciated monkeys are forced to act out human activities as part of a cruel circus show.

Wearing bizarre costumes and dolls masks, the long tailed macaques can be seen riding bikes, rocking horses and scooters while their owners collect money from spectators.

The primates are openly sold in monkey parks across the country and bought by trainers for as little as £14.

Kept in small cages, they are forced to undergo agonising training regimes to perform stunts at the Masked Monkey Park.

Some of the trainers even hang the moneys upside down, or strap their arms behind their backs, to force the monkeys to walk upright.

One of the trainers, called Cecep, told a local newspaper around half the monkeys undergoing the training died.

He said: ‘I’ve lost count of how many monkeys have died. It’s the risk we have to take. Treating them leniently will not make them able to do anything.

‘Sometimes I feel pity for the monkeys, but life is hard in Jakarta.’ Animal rights activists said the practice was cruel and against the law.

Pramudya Harzani, of Jakarta Animal Aid Network, said: ‘In the first two weeks of training, the monkeys suffer incredibly.

‘They are hung and forced to do things humans do. Many monkeys don’t make it and die.’

Our telephone at the JAAN office kept receiving calls of compassionate people concerned about the brutality inflicted towards monkeys on the roads in Jakarta, the ‘dancing monkeys (topeng monyet). Emails and pictures were send almost daily to us, about this cruelty and JAAN was trying hard to enable a rescue operation for these monkeys. After two years of campaigns, JAAN had started to rescue and rehabilitate dancing monkeys. There are many still on the the streets and we have a lot of work ahead of us, but we already have tens of monkeys rescued with the assistance of the local authorities and these monkeys (long tailed macaques) are now in our care. After the rescue, the real work begins. Finally the monkey can literally ‘take off his clothes’ and start a new life.

The macaques need to undergo a quarantine period during which they are checked for various diseases, including those that  can spread to humans (zoonosis, like tuberculosis and hepatitis). Monkeys have been tested positive showing again the danger of allowing these monkeys on the streets as potential health threat as well. These monkeys obvious have been infected by the disease by people, maybe by their ex-owners and while still out on the streets were be able to spread the disease to other humans.

And all the monkeys have had their teeth cut by the owners to prevent them from biting leaving most monkeys with horrific painful tooth infections for which they need long term and expensive treatments and surgery. Once proven healthy, the monkey can be socialized with other monkeys in the specially built and designed socialization cage. Here, its time for friends making and playing, grooming, and even swimming!

Zoe, one week after her rescue is looking so much happier. She comes and greets people, wagging her tail, while in the first few days she would hide away from us, shivering. Her wounds are now drying and healing, but she will need long term treatment to fully recover. Not only is she extremely thin, she also suffers from both Demodex and Scabies, two serious skin diseases! Also a parasite has been found in her blood. Zoe is in need of a loving home or foster.  She is still a young dog with a long happy future ahead of her and you can be part of it! Jakarta has a BIG problem in wildlife trafficking. Slow lorises are nocturnal primates that are sold in the biggest amounts and throughout the city. This, despite them being protected under UU number 5 1990 and CITES I, providing them the highest status of possible protection. But slow lorises are protected in theory only. The trade in slow lorises is not just threatening them towards extinction, this trade is extremely cruel. The teeth of the slow lorises are cut by the traders and their gums develop horrific infections, often killing them within just a few weeks time. people do keep buying lorises because they are extremely cute to see.

But they make the worst pets, in fact they never can become a pet. They simply cant adapt to human surroundings, noise, light and the fact that their teeth have been cut results in early death.

JAAN’s team have rescued seven slow lorises that were offered on the side of the street in South Jakarta; the traders realized this is illegal and handed over the lorises to JAAN. Now these seven lorises are in need of intensive treatments and hopefully rehabilitation and release will be an option for them. The rescue center run by International Animal Rescue has also reached its limits due to the big amounts of lorises in need of help. JAAN therefore will care for the lorises.

Zoe is a very sweet and young Pitbull female. She was rescued on May 3 from the street; someone spotted her sleeping in a corner, wounded, skinny and frightened. Zoe is in pitiful condition. She shows marks of bite wounds and we suspect she has been used for fighting. She has a very extreme skin condition for which she is being treated now by our medical team. The costs for medicines are high. Now Zoe is kept at a foster home with many other dogs, since she is in need of full attention, we wish to find her a loving new home or at least a temporary foster until we found that perfect home for her. Cute Cara : Cara was found wandering the street in Depok. Unfortunately she was hit by a motorbike and broke her right back leg. This week she will be operated and a pin will be placed in her broken leg. Cara is about 4 months of age and VERY sweet!
