Sadly, the welfare of domestic animals in Jakarta is often atrocious.Many pet owners believe that they are taking adequate care of their companion animals but in fact the animals are being neglected and abused.JAAN is committed to improving the general well being of all domestic animals.

Education is a big priority at JAAN since we believe that the general thinking about and the treatment of domestic animals needs to be changed in order to improve the current situation.

We provide educational information on the following subjects:

1. Sterilization: all cats and dogs (pets) should be spayed and neutered since there are so many unwanted cats and dogs.
2. Humane treatment of domestic animals: as opposed to the abuse and neglect that: many dogs and cats are subjected to. So often these companion animals suffer from physical abuse, torture, and beating, starvation, being dumped on the toll roads, set on fire or just simply being abandoned in their own yards when the owner moves away. Being isolated on short chains or in cages is a very common fate for dogs in Jakarta.
3. Becoming a responsible pet owner: Many people don’t realize what they get themselves into and often choose a pet for the wrong reasons, which includes as a status symbol, following a trend etc. They have no knowledge of the type or breed of the animal and don’t want to deal with any problems that may arise in the future. People often have no basic knowledge of how to take care of an animal and either leaves their dog isolated in a tiny cage so that it barks incessantly or let it roam around freely becoming a burden to others. Choosing the right pet that suits your lifestyle, surroundings, budget, basic knowledge on how to care for an animal, and being committed to the animal you want to care for are therefore crucial points that need to be considered before bringing an animal into your family. Most often it is simple ignorance, which causes the suffering that companion animals are facing today in Jakarta.

JAAN is also committed to promoting and conducting sterilization programs for stray dogs and cats to help reduce the stray populations as well as providing emergency medical care or fostering when needed.

Collaboration between the local animal shelter ( Pondok Pengayom Satwa ) and JAAN is an ongoing process where we help to find good permanent homes for dogs and cats, coordinate with people who would like to volunteer at the shelter and offer any other assistance that the shelter needs.

These poor poodles were found in an empty house were they spent 2 years in a tiny cage. They were occasionally fed by the security guard, but never let out. They were in horrible shape when they were found. They had severe ear infections, they suffered of Mal nutrition, skin disease, kidney failure , and rotten teeth caused by bad and irregular diet. Both these dogs needed many months to recover and will have to deal with some medical conditions the rest of their lives. Nevertheless, they survived and have found loving and forever homes.
