Adoption gives animals a second chance in life.Often pet animals are dumped by irresponsible owners and end up either on the street or in the local animal shelter.

Owning a pet has become very ‘fashionable’ nowadays and many people like to brag about the cute pedigree puppy or kitten, or the exotic monkey or reptile they have just purchased without realizing what they have gotten themselves into. Good business of course, pet shops have been multiplying rapidly.

Sadly, 99% of all pet shops are providing very low standards for the animals under their care. Animals are kept in unhealthy situations and are often cramped up together in tiny cages. They often have no water and are suffering from severe stress.

Dogs and cats go insane because they are kept in small cages and have no space to even turn around. Almost all animals are sick and often have skin diseases.

Unfortunately, nobody seems to care, especially the owner of the pet shop because their only motivation is money and they couldn’t care less about the well being of those poor animals.

Please let’s teach others and in particular our children, that no wild animal should be kept as a pet but should live in its own habitat. Let us all promote kindness and teach our children that running a business at the expense of the wellbeing of these animals is wrong. NEVER buy an animal from a careless and abusive pet shop. Never buy an animal out of pity because the minute you buy they’ll go out to get another one.If people stop buying these cruel practices will stop as well. Don’t buy. ADOPT!

Information about Jakarta’s Animal Shelter

Pondok Pengayom Satwa (PPS) is a non-profit foundation established in 1987 by a group of animal lovers. PPS is one of the few animal shelters in Indonesia and the only one in Jakarta.

The shelter’s aim is to provide shelter, care and nourishment for unwanted dogs and cats and to find them good homes. Promoting better understanding regarding care and welfare of animals and the benefits of sterilization for pets are also important goals.

Currently, the shelter is full with 105 dogs and 110 cats. There is always a long waiting list of people wanting to turn over their dog or cat. Unfortunately, it is impossible to accommodate all unwanted and abused dogs and cats in Jakarta because of limited capacity and lack of funding. The shelter is often put in heartbreaking situations where they can not accept a dog or cat, knowing that this animal needs help badly.

Since PPS’s goal is to find loving homes and to better the animals situations, they have an adoption policy to help eliminate as many ‘risks’ and unwanted situations as possible.

The adoption policy is as follows:

1. Choose an animal that you would like to adopt
2. Fill out a questionnaire
3. The shelter will contact you to make an appointment to conduct a home survey.
4. If the home survey team has approved your application, the animal that you wish to adopt can be picked up after signing an adoption contract.
5. Are-survey can be expected several months after the adoption to ensure the well being of the animal.

Some people might find this process unnecessary and/or burdensome, but based on years of experience the shelter believes that follow-up is critical.

If you are looking for a pet, try the shelter first !! There are many wonderful dogs and cats waiting for a new family. Don’t buy from a pet shop or from the street even though you may feel really sorry for the animal. These animals are often treated in a horrible way and have diseases that might not be evident immediately. By buying from these places you are supporting their business, and by ’saving’ one animal you are ensuring that another unfortunate wretch will fill the cage.
