We strive to end the cruel trade & use of dancing monkeys. Its time to hit Surabaya & we need YOUR help!

We do all we can to BAN the use & cruel trade of dancing monkeys, locally called ‘topeng monyet’. These monkeys are dressed in children’s clothing & forced to perform & beg for money in the streets & major cities of Indonesia. They are now also expanding to other rural areas. Our friends at Tasikoki Wildlife Center even reported about dancing monkeys in the Menado area. Fortunately they took action & managed to confiscate the monkeys that were there.

The training to become topeng monyet involves cruel practices such as beating & hanging by the neck on tip toes. To prevent bites, their teeth are brutally cut furthering pain & suffering of these animals. JAAN has campaigned endlessly since 2009 to stop this cruel trade.

There are severe welfare issues with this practice and it should be ended! The succesful ban on dancing monkeys in Jakarta followed by total ban in West Java Province fueled our motivation to work harder to have a total ban in Java and hopefully eventually in Indonesia.  We need your help though! The dancing monkey you see above, with a tight chain pulling him, begging for money for the handler is in Surabaya right now, performing still!

Please ask the Government of Java Timur to take action against this abuse by expressing how you feel on his twitter, this has proved effective in the past so with enough messages, something will have to be done. Twitter: @JatimPemprov
